Tornado in Blue
by pgweber
This is a shot taken today of the same steam locomotive at the same place as in my Avatar, 4 years apart and travelling in the opposite direction.
New build steam loco No. 60163 'Tornado' now wearing blue (though you wouldn't know it due to the lighting) speeds North past Balderton (south of Newark), with a day trip from London to York.
It was an unfortunate combination of the line's direction, strong sunlight and time of day that lost some of the colour of the loco.
It also loses something by the fact that the loco was coasting, so no display from the chimney.

Hi John.
I was using my DA55-300. I had my K5 set up to focus using the AF button and not the shutter release, so I pre-focussed on my chosen point.
I did use a little p/p to lighten shadows and subdue the highlights.

Great shot Peter. Was it travelling very fast at this point?
I got the same train at York when it arrived there and if I get time I'll post my version on here later. Its the first time I've seen Tornado in blue and it looks terrific.

Hello David. As you can probably tell by the (lack of) exhaust, she seemed to be coasting at this point.
You were a bit unlucky in that she was supposed to be going to Durham but this was curtailed to York, reportedly due to "pathing issues" around Doncaster. Never mind, plenty of photo opportunities in York.
It would be nice to see your shot particularly if you can show the blue.
Ex GWR King No.6023 (disguised as No.6015 King Richard III due to Leicester connection) is running at the GCR next weekend so I may go to try and capture her in blue too.

Peter my blue Tornado is about to be added to the Gallery. I was a bit hacked of that they cancelled its trip to Durham but York is less than an hour away on the train.
