Thaw

I'd welcome a critique of this one. I took it earier this year and initially disgarded it as being a duffer. Having returned to it I feel it ought to have potental but am not sure quite what to do with it.

I know the tree near the middle breaks the rule of thirds, but I think I can get away with it here.

I don't much like the bottom quarter of the photo as I think it over complicates the scene. However, cropping doesn't seem to work well either.

Any suggestions?

Hey Mr. Waypoint,

Rules is for fools, so forget 'em.

I like it as it is, but, I did block out the bottom third as you said & I liked that too.
For me, this is a very nice, well balanced photo.
I like the shadows of the trees across the ice.
My only criticism is to get rid of that small bit of blue rubbish near the bottom right hand corner.
Best Regards, Larry.

All the gear & no idea.

Great just the way it is..the tree centred works for me..great light breaking through it..great atmosphere has been captured..a time and a place conveyed beautifully...

I reckon the tree is near enough the thirds and your horizon is right as well with the trees breaking it up. This is a cracking image, one I would have been well chuffed to take

My suggestion, leave it as it is

I go along with Larry and would probably crop the bottom just above the 'blue rubbish'. That way the eye is drawn to the main tree.

But as in so many walks of life there's no RIGHT answer - just whatever tickles your fancy !

I would crop just above the two tufts of grass on the left and clone out the blue thingy, crop down the sky half way giving a rectangular crop, it's a beautiful shot and i hope you don't mind my opinion.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

That "small bit of blue rubbish" is in fact snow. Funny, my eyes don't see it as blue, but most people do and they're definitely right.

I did a version much as Maria describes and submitted it into my local club competition. It scored 8/10, which was about average for the night. The judge suggested I should have cropped off more of the bottom. So possibly it would have been best not cropping at all or cropping off just above the blue thingy, as some of you suggested.

Still, it scored better than the 7/10 I got for this. It was judged as having, "Too much sky".

Whilst I learn from competitions they can make you very critical of your own photos and, if you're not careful, spoil the enjoyment of them.

I wouldn't touch it, it's lovely as it is, bar the blue patch that is!
