Summer Streak

Ex LNER 'A4' No 60009 'Union of South Africa' is caught hurrying past North Muskham near Newark, back to Kings Cross. This was the final leg of 'The Cathedrals Explorer', a mainly steam hauled tour of the UK.
It was taken on Saturday 17th May, which was a very warm day, so very little exhaust was visible, contrasted with my early morning shot of 'Duchess of Sutherland' (see my recent portfolio) taken about a month ago.
I must have taken a half step to the left, because I thought that blurred piece of foliage was further to the edge of the shot. The two line-side fixtures are slightly distracting, one of them being a milepost indicating a distance of 123 miles to London Kings Cross.

She looked the part with the maroon coaches as she rolled by effortlessly.
I don't mind the furniture but I was a bit annoyed at having moved after I had previously chosen a better composition.

This must be just about the hardest working steam locomotive on the mainline at the moment. I'm not sure what's going on further south with engines like Bittern, Earl of Mount Edgcombe or Tangmere but up here Union of South Africa is hard at work every week.
Two Sundays ago I caught it coming through Durham at a heck of a speed with the GBV11 tour, making up time lost near Berwick. It was an hour down at Tweedmouth and only about half that through Durham.
Last week it tore through Hexham on time having left Carlisle ten minutes late. Another photographer at the scene said it was the fastest he'd ever seen a steam train come through Hexham.
