The Sagacious Journey

Cracking panorama. The clouds over Dartmoor are stupendous at the moment.

The hopes to make a panormaic image from this location had involved a three year journey from visualisation to actuality.

I had stopped here many times and looked, exploring the shapes and patterns of the landscape, yet til this particualar evening I never made a photograph of the scene.

I hoped for yellow rapeseed fields, light that gave modelling to the hills and interesting enough clouds to define the space above the vast undulating landscape. The open gates in the boundary hedge at either side seemed to invite ones gaze into the first valley and the higher level clouds allowed a restful drift out of the image. This was the defining moment for my idea, I walked away with a happy heart & soul and a big smile. Some things are worth waiting for in life.

Thanks very much for your encouraging comments Gary! This was a great challenge in terms of computer processing power to complete - resulting in an 80 megapixel panorama... 5ft wide at 300dpi.... 73inches wide if I printed it at 250dpi! The biggest work i have created yet.

This one was photographed on Friday last week, I talked to a colleague of my girlfriend who was out hiking & camping on the moor that evening and she told of torrential hail, and a fine (and slightly worrying!) display of thunder and lightning.

The clouds have given wonderful drama to the moorland and south hams landscapes the last few morning and evenings indeed. Some great 'puddles' of light and dramatic cloud shadows. Hope you manage to get out with your camera and relish in the dramatic weather... loooks like it might do this a fiar bit over the next month from the forecast.

I made another photo across Yarnacombe vale this morning on the way to work in dramatic light.. another idea final realised (after considering it for a couple of years and waiting for the right moment!)

This was created from hand-held photos (image stabilizer - on!) due to one of the legs on my grandfather's old Bilora Stabilo tripod having seized at a rather unfortunate time.. so it was a pleasant suprise that it worked out well... Microsoft Research's ICE stitching software has done a fine job at helping put it all together and its a free too

perfect Panorama .. and must admit i do like Microsoft ICE done a couple of 360's myself with my old bridge camera .. a lot of work there but well worth the effort .. are you going to have it printed ?

Thanks very much for your encouraging comments Rich Yeah I look forward to printing it out sometime soon. Can't afford to do yet as I have just spent loads on getting some mounted prints done for a gallery down in Salcombe for a forthcoming exhibition, but if/ when those sell then this will be the next image to get printed. Large format prints with laminated card backs ain't cheap but I do look forward to seeing it for real...

Thanks Giuolio for your encouraging comments The computer made lots of un-nerving groaning noises and gave long periods of 'not responding' messages as it was processing it all ... thought the whole thing might crash permanantley... 80 mega pixel / 300mb TIFF file processing is rather a large demand it seems!

Aye Carumba! 80 megapixels! Well worth the effort.

This is the sort of image that I really wish I could see at full size in its full glory. PUG - excellent though it is - can only - hint at the detail and texture here.

The section that was uploaded to ephotozine shows the real quality of your picture, that wasn't shown well by PU.
I think the same as Rich, you should print out this beauty.
