First ever

I`m pretty sure this is the first time a Gresley A4 pacific has ever worked over the Liverpool -Wigan stretch of line.
The honour fell to 60009 Union of South Africa working today's "Cumbrian Mountain Express" and photographed here on the return leg at St Helens.
I must say though, these LNER locos don't half sound a bit tinny compared to our LMS Stanier pacifics!. (that should ruffle a few feathers)

Super shot Cliff, is it HDR? I've yet to photograph Union of South Africa since its lengthy overhaul and return to the mainline so I'm looking forward to it coming nearer home.
That 'tinny' exhaust sound you refer to was what made the East Coast Pacifics, classes A1, A2, rebuilt A3 and A4s all so efficient and speedy engines. Its the multi-jet blastpipe Kylchap exhaust system coupled to the double chimney.
As for the Stanier Duchess Class Pacifics, clearly superb engines, it was decided in the latter days of British Rail steam to scrap them and replace them with Class A1s from the Eastern and North Eastern Regions on the Anglo Scottish expresses between Carlisle and Glasgow.
There now, that should get the LMS fans steamed up.

PS: I understand there is to be another steam festival on the East Lancs Railway in the autumn and possible test runs with Flying Scotsman on the line sometime soon. Fancy another trip there?

Our engines had to work for a living with all the heavy inclines such as Shap and that's partly the reason our Pacifics where withdrawn earlier because they had had a hard life!.
We shall discus this further at Bury

It's a striking viewpoint and I like the effect.
It is almost something the LNER could have dreamed up (in a painting) to emphasize the modernity of these locos when new in the 1930s.
