Over The Top
by pgweber
The third of three steam trains I photographed last weekend was headed by Ex LMS 4-6-0 'Black Five' No. 45305.
It is seen having just passed the highest point on the Settle-Carlisle line at Ais Gill and is starting to accelerate on the downhill grades.
One can begin to appreciate from the picture, the wild barren open spaces that this line traverses.
This was a day trip called "The Mersey Moorlander" having originated from Crewe & Liverpool. It is repeated on Mondays in August.

Thanks again, John.
I had no idea what was on the train on this day. Another photter said on Sunday that 5305 was going via low-loader to Carnforth the following Thursday, so I suppose I was expecting the A4 from the Crewe pool.
Nice to get 3 different engines over the 3 days though.

Just spotted this picture of your's Peter and its great. That seems a good vantage point for photos at Ais Gill so next time I'm that way I'll look out for it.
Co-incidentally I photgraphed this train the same day as you, just a few miles away at Dent on the northbound journey. I was on my way from Durham to Shropshire so couldn't hang around for the return trip otherwise we might have met.

Thank you for your appreciation David.
I was glad the driver still had the regulator open once over the summit.
I think you know this spot already:

My vantage point was from the top right corner of your shot.
I was over at Greenholme for the return of this one.

At first I thought this was from the bridge right at the summit Peter and that the train was heading south. After reading your other comments I now realise this was from a brigde I've photographed and over which I passed in the car not long before you got this shot. At some point on my way between Kirkby Stephen and Dent I must have passed you cycling to Ais Gill.
