How strange, looks like you had a filter that followed the line of the dip in the cliffs causing everything above it to fade. like the effect though

Thank you all for commenting. i had gone here thinking I'd made a mistake as there was big grey bank of cloud covering where the sun would rise, and this broke through and eventually the cloud all cleared as well!
