the mystic mountain

Low passing clouds gave the Mont Ventoux this dramatic and mystic appearance - this mountain is kind of special when you come from the 40° hot plains up to the summit and it is 20° cooler and you find no more plants you feel like being on another planet

Yes it is a regular if brutal and infamous fixture on the TDF. The great British cyclist Tom Simpson lost his life on it's slopes in the early 60's.Great shot, Axel, made by those brilliant clouds. Aside from this it is a superb photograph.
At the spot where he died you find a memorial and bikers from all over the world stop and honor him like a hero, but for me this is somehow strange! Simpson was the first official victim of doping - his death was more a suicide then a tragedy - he risked his health by playing unfair and when you look at the sport today, you get a feeling what he started 1967.
However - I don't want to judge this - it is just something that makes me wonder......

Axel, don't get me started on doping in cycling. From Jan Ulrich to Contador I've had heroes falling to pieces about my ears. I love the sport and admire anyone who can ride like the pros do, but the drugs and blood transfusions leave a nasty taste in my mouth.
How did we get onto this? My fault for hi-jacking your lovely picture which hasn't been enhanced by any drugs!

you are right - a topic with so many falling hereos from all countries should not be a topic of a photographic forum. I just wanted to say that this is one of the mystiques of this mountains - it is such a special atmosphere up there - you feel like in another world and perhaps because of this, people see more the truly amazing skills of professional bikers and not so much the unhonest thing behind. As I said - I don't judge on this - professional sport is unhonest in so many ways - the only thing I dislike is the theatre surround it. When they are standing in front of the camera and say unisolo - I never took drugs (and the needles are still sticking in the arms).... But you are right - despite of that - they still reach such an amazing level of physical and menthal strength....
