The 55-300 lens is great for this sort of shot.
I've also learnt that a bad colour photo can sometimes be salvaged by converting to b/w!

I'm not sure that would ever have been a bad colour photo! Anyways it works great in BW. I have also taken some really good shots of crashing waves with the 55-300. I agree that it's ideal for this type of shot.

Certainly looks like a good lens.
You can often rescue a "bad" colour shot by over-saturating the colours then converting. This gives the monochrome tones something to bite on and adds tonal contrast.

I didn't know about over-saturating the colours first - thanks for that.
I admit I did cheat and add in the sky which was completely flat, but perhaps overdid it a little.
