Snapped beautifully Simon, I particularly like the wide aperture and dark background.

A super shot, Simon. So sharp and detailed.
Best wishes,

Great shot. but hard for me to really appreciate it. It reminds me of my late mother in law.

Thanks, all, for the positive feedback - and also to whoever selected it as PotW. That was an unexpected surprise when I awoke yesterday morning. I should also thank the kite for unwittingly putting its head in the right place...
It's obviously a lot easier capturing raptors at a bespoke reserve (although red kites are common enough above motorway bridges on certain parts of the M40), but this one obligingly stuck its head into a pool of sunshine as I was passing. I was already shooting wide open, as the available light was a bit patchy, so I flicked to spot metering to make sure the eye and bill area were accurately exposed... and that conveniently underexposed any background clutter to the point of invisibility. I didn't do much PP: a quick crop in PS Elements 12, and 'auto colour correct' gave the head a little more pep, but that was it.
This weekend? Back to racing cars...
