Conwy Castle

by pgweber

For a few Sundays now, there has been a day trip from Liverpool to Holyhead by steam train along the North Wales coast. It has been captured to good effect by Cliff-P & Johnwhit.

It seems that the one which ran on Sunday 19th August is the last one for this year, so I decided to have a long weekend in North Wales.

Like my last gallery shot at Birkett Common, it is taken at a popular location which I have passed many times without finding properly until now.

The loco is Ex-LNER 4-6-2 'A4' No. 60009, 'Union of South Africa' captured passing Conwy Castle. She had been brought to a stand by a local train running in front and stopping at Conwy station, causing some difficulty in restarting the train which included a diesel on the back to help with the shuttle to Llandudno.

However she soon got into her stride and sounded good for it, though not the same as a Duchess, David

You're quite right Peter, an A4 would never sound like a Duchess when opened up. Less roar, more business-like. Nice pic of #9 in a classic location.

I think I know roughly where that spot is Peter and a fine vantage point it seems to be.

You have captured the A4 beautifully as she heads off to Holyhead, Well done.

ps, I don't think David s talking to me

She sounded like there was a rush of steam and plenty to spare, not to mention the distinctive chime whistle, David.

Saw her at five separate locations with having my bike and the train shuttling back and forth to Llandudno.

Cliff, I went out of Conwy through the arch, past the park/bowling green on the left and then just as the road curves right, a footpath was signposted up the hill into a field, though had to watch my step as the sheep don't care!

Yes I am Cliff. I think the Duchesses are great engines but as an 'Eastern' fan I reckon the A4s have the edge.

We used to stay in a large caravan overlooking the river just up the road from there at Gorse Hill, I`ve spent many an hour walking around there with the camera and I seem to remember that view Peter. (and the sheep poop!)

A wonderful shot from a classic location. I remember sitting near there and watching nuclear flask trains pulled by class 20s and the last regular type 37 services when my son was younger. Never lucky enough to see a steam engine, though.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Thank you Andrew, David & Cliff for your kind comments.

Did you live near Conwy, Andrew? You would have been spoilt for photographic opportunities.

I was going to say a classic shot in a classic location, but Andrew got there first!
