Florence and Amici Miei

by GIULIO57

Florencescape of Florence seen by the top: close to Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato church. Image taken a few ya when Shaun Wilson (PUMA) came to Florence with his lovely wife. A bad weather (on far left it is raining)…but this place and compo reminds me of an Italian old movie talking about Florence and its peoples. That cult movie is “Amici Miei” and this compo brings me back to Nov. 4th, 1966 when river Arno flooded my town…well..a small part of Amici Miei was played here (reminding observers to those days) when main actors are looking at Florence flooded by river Arno and by tons of rain falling down from clouds….nevertheless they don’t loose their “funny”soul and they’re still able to perform several jokes….
PS Not a beautiful photo…a postcard only!

A unique and lovely view that makes you want to peer over the hedge to see more...
(I think I'd rather see Florence than Rome.)
Best wishes,

Andrew

It is very difficult for me to give you a reply. Rome is very different from Florence. I’m sure there is not “one”Rome but a lot of different Rome live inside Rome: Trastevere(the old part); EUR the new one; strange suburbs (strange for me that living in Florence I don’t like those far areas with high skyscrapers along large streets…); Vaticano and so on…I find this puzzle very interesting to understand and to discover. Sometimes I prefer the chaos of Rome rather than the fake “silence of innocence” in Florence…but this is my opinion only(most of peoples in Florence hate Rome. I underline hate and not only for football!!). Florence is smart, polite; the history of Middle Age and Reinessance is part of it. Florence is not “too modern”like Rome…but just for reasons above I can state that Siena is far the BEST. Siena is unique. Living or visiting Siena means to go “back into the past” without loosing contact with modern times. Test to believe! Sir Harold Acton spent most of his life in Florence and many ya reading a few of his words (interview) he talked about Florence and Fiorentini(peoples of Florence)stating that they were very close to English peoples. He used a nice word “anglo-beceri”to describe this “state of mind”and talking about English living in Chianti area he talked about “Chianti-shire”. Right yesterday and today, IMHO. I understand what you say because you told using different words same “ideas” of Sir Acton (a person that DID a lot for Florence). When English peoples are in Florence or Tuscany “they are at home”. I would like to go further: the real hearth of Tuscany is Siena and Chianti Shire is between Florence and Siena! Just seems a destiny!!
Princess Diana and Prince Charles went to Florence on honeymoon another evidence that your words are rich of truth

Sadly, I have only ever driven past Firenze and that was on the way down to Umbria quite a few years ago!
Yes, it is a postcard photo but it gives us a good impression of the city!

Umbria...another beautiful part of Italy...and if you (Paul or other members in PUG-PPG)will come to Italy in July..REMEMBER to visit Castelluccio da Norcia (Piano Grande). In the Middle of July it is in full blossoming with thousands of different colours, coloured stripes and so on! I'llgo as it happens every year! Visit that area..it well worth
