Another Saturday, Another No.9

Some railway enthusiasts refer to 'Mallard' and her sisters by just the last 2 digits of their numbers under the British Railways numbering scheme.
'Mallard' was 60022, hence 22; last week's shot was of 'Union of South Africa' which was 60009 or 'number 9'.
The Deltic diesel locomotives replaced 'Mallard' and her sisters in the early 1960s. One of those passed through Sheffield today, on a day trip to Carlisle. The engine was D9009 (or perhaps number 9 to devotees of the class), named 'Alycidon' after a famous race-horse.
Can any of you remember the last time you travelled on a train made up of a locomotive and coaches? It doesn't happen very often now and makes rail enthusiasts of my generation all wistful.

This is a very nice picture. You got the lenght of the train very nice. I also like the colours and the puddles on the left.
I believe the Deltics where the only Diesels which had a hydraulic transmission which was similar to the German V200 Diesels which run about the same time as the Deltics. and I think, but I may be wrong, The transmission was made by Voit.
Nice locos.

I am interested to know where you get 'Peaks' down your way Andrew, as they were always my favourite.
Horst, the Deltics had twin engines and electric transmission but you may be thinking of our class 42/43 'Warship' locomotives which were diesel hydraulic and I am sure I have read of their common ancestry with the V200s.

The light was a bit tricky Nezih, so I used a couple of earlier trains to judge where the sidelight coming from the left between factories would hit the front of the train. I then pre-focussed there for this shot.
I don't know about balanced, Paul. When I got to the location, there was already a throng of fotters and I had to tag on at one end of the line rather than in the middle
