A very nice capture with lots of bygone elements, not least the semaphore. Is that a hint of setting sun too?
If I screw my eyes up tight, I could imagine it was late in the period 1948-1968 but you would have to clone out that "Loco Stop" sign.
I am heading to that area myself, in the next couple of days. Cliff and I were discussing the Duchess on Saturday (up Shap and back over S&C), then there is 5690/48151 on York/Leeds to Carlisle on Sunday and the first of this year's fellsman next wednesday.
Regards

I know what you mean DD but the 1920s are out for this type of loco, they were inroduced mid-1930s.
Peter: I may be allowed out to play on Sunday and Wednesday but for domestic reasons the Black Duchess is out for me on Saturday.
My favourite spot on the Settle and Carlisle Railway is to get them at Appleby where they stop for water. While they fill up I dash about 10-12 miles to Culgaith to catch them at speed. On the way back I get them at Langwathby and leapfrog the Appleby stop to grab pictures again at Kirkby Stephen on the climb to Ais Gill.

Gorgeous shot, David. I love the compressed perspective. You really are the king of main-line photography!
Best wishes,
Andrew
