Blowing Bittern
by pgweber
In July 2008, the 4 remaining UK based A4 class steam locos, the most famous of which is 'Mallard' were re-united at York Railway Museum.
No. 60019 'Bittern' got there by taking a tour called 'The Coronation', from London to York returning the next day. One of the other locos continued from York to Edinburgh.
It is pictured on the return run, leaving Newark after a stop for water.
Just after it passed me, the safety valve loudly released a jet of steam (to keep the boiler at a safe pressure), sometimes known as 'blowing off'.
Shot with K10D/18-55 as a jpeg.
