With flash there is more detail in macro images, but often the background goes black, which I'm not keen on.

This works very well indeed. The flash hasn't killed the background in my opinion.

Absolutely love this... the flash, and the fact that you've shot this from slightly underneath, makes this chap "loom" into the shot... also particularly like the selective isolation and brave depth of field... great stuff...

It's very subjective how DOF is used in macro shots Bill, I had a bit of criticism on the Forum for using narrow DOF on these shots, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't!Absolutely love this... the flash, and the fact that you've shot this from slightly underneath, makes this chap "loom" into the shot... also particularly like the selective isolation and brave depth of field... great stuff...

No, Maria, I was using a wireless flash trigger on a cheap external flashgun, with the power turned down to about 1/3. The camera was used one-handed in my right hand, the flash was in my left hand so that I could direct it exactly where I wanted it. The flashgun head had a home-made diffuser attached, made from the end of a Pringles Tube with the plastic cap sanded to make it opaque.Wow, i've never thought to you use flash on a macro image outdoors, was this the on camera flash? fantastic!
