Lonely Leander

by pgweber

For steam buffs, the first 'Fellsman' tour of the season ran on Wednesday 28th July. It runs every Wednesday till September, from Lancaster via Preston, Blackburn, Hellifield and along the famous Settle to Carlisle line. On this scenic line, the trains are dwarfed by the hills as shown here.

Ex LMS 4-6-0 No. 5690 'Leander' is working hard as she approaches the highest point on the line at Ais Gill, near the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border. Unknown to me at the time, one of our friends, David, was about a mile up the road.

Shot with K10D/50-200 as a PEF, then SILKYPIXed.

Not just an excellent train shot showing Leander at grips with the gradient but also a fine landscape of the Northern Pennines on the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border.

Thanks David.

I was going to take a closer shot sat atop the stone wall, but 3 other photographers turned up and took this high viewpoint.

In my conspicuous yellow cycling jacket, I could have been quite unpopular, so I joined them higher up.

It meant I did something slightly different to the usual and so added the landscape component to the shot.

Peter
