He was actually trying to shuffle his way back down the stem after spotting me approaching. I just put the camera on manual focus and very very slowly crept towards him until I got him in focus. I suppose the perfectionist would say that the focus is not on the eyes but when peering down a set of tubes with very little light and not able to breathe I'm actually quite happy with the outcome.

Fabulous composition with the contrasting diagonals (vertical stem and grasshopper; horizontal (near) criss-crossing twigs and stems) set against the sharp head, forelimbs and diverging antennae projecting back into and out of frame. Lighting is just right for my tastes, too.
How did you persuade the subject to pose for so long with such style?
