Frost

A frozen and rotted fence post - original had a very distracting background - is the full black too much?

It's not too much, IMHO. It Is not distracting: It helps to stack fore/background. It works fine because your subject becomes an interesting "camouflage"... A fence changes into a "Mountain against a dark Sky".....or a "salt Crystal against a black background". Nice work.

You were confined to the limits of the lens you had. Had it been a 50mm macro then you would have had a field day with this wooden post. The result, as it is - just view it full sized! - is sufficient to make anyone's head turn. Play with a few crops. It's a fantastic find and capture.

I agree that the black background makes for a more attention seeking photo.
