Flying Scotsman again
by pgweber
Nation's Favourite 'Flying Scotsman' is caught here near Ilkeston in the Erewash Valley (which is not as picturesque as it sounds, following said river along the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border). It was en-route from London Victoria to York on Saturday 5th June.

Thanks Vic. I might have been a bit heavy handed with the cropping and resizing. I cropped from 4928x3264 to 3900x2600 and then reduced it to 25% (975x650) for the forum.
It looks quite sharp on the original, taken with my FA50 which usually performs well.
I used to stand on the steps of this footbridge a little more to the left, but the vegetation has sprouted since my last visit and a large number of non-railway viewers were in the best spots already.
In this case I stood on my bike to look over the parapet.

Mornin' Peter. You are obviously a train buff. I'm not. Now I'm going to make you really jealous. I'm 77 and was born in 1939 in Newcastle but my mother was from Dedington in Oxfordshire so between 1939 and 1946 we travelled on LNER half way to Banbury. We changed trains half way. BUT not until we had travelled behind the FLYING SCOTSMAN. Also as a child I remember my dad taking me along the platform to see the engine and a nice man asking me if I wanted to come up. SO I went on the footplate of said loco somewhere between 1943/1946.
Are you Mr Green??????????????????????????????

A nice uncluttered shot with no overhead wires. Even my local backwater the Barking to Gospel Oak line is in the process of electrification so locations like this are getting harder to find.

Thanks for those reminiscences Vic.
In the 1970s my Dad worked out of Sheffield railway station and took me there one day when Flying Scotsman paused for water whilst on a promotional tour. I got to 'cab it' and got the driver and fireman's autograph.
However I am jealous of the journey you made, presumably passing through Sheffield along the old Great Central (GCR) cross-country route between York & Banbury. That was in part a victim of 60s rationalisation and the Beeching cuts.
This was taken on a secondary route 'smudge', between Nottingham and Sheffield so although Bedford-Sheffield (via Derby) is to be wired in due course, the overhead paraphernalia is a long way off on this route. Isn't the GOBLIN (Gospel Oak & Barking LINe) an important freight route?

Peter. As I said. We changed half way. (It was JOURNIES not journey) The LNER ran to Kings Cross in the 40's and we changed I think at either York or Doncaster. I know sometime in the 40's it went off to do "War Work"??? (I was just a kid and not a loco buff so I'm not to sure about all the facts) but when it ran it ran Edinburgh to Kings Cross via Newcastle. SO I only made you half jealous as you have been up there on the footplate too.

Love the shot, love the stories, I can remember in the 60's the Flying Scotsman was a regular out of Peterborough we used to go and watch it pass at a little village called Helpston just outside Peterborough
