Devonian Deltic

by pgweber

Whilst in Devon last week, a preserved 'Deltic' diesel locomotive No. 55022 'Royal Scots Grey' brought a train of daytrippers from Doncaster to Paignton.

The run was not without problems as a build up of oil in the exhaust system caused a fire which required the standby locomotive to rescue the train on the run to Paignton. Remnants of oil can be seen on the side of the locomotive.

The travelling fitters put things right and the 'Deltic' is seen leading the train past Cockwood harbour near Dawlish on the return journey. Sadly the tide is out.

The name 'Deltic' is derived from the configuration of the adapted marine engines in these locomotives which is similar to the shape of the Greek letter delta.

Despite being preserved since 1982, this locomotive got on the BBC news in May of this year as a freight operators hired it to pull a series of local freights in the North East.

Thank you John.

It really needs a blue sky, the tide to fill the harbour and a few more boats bobbing around.

However as you will appreciate, we often go to record an event i.e. a sprecial train, so all of the desirable photographic elements don't always come together at the right time.

Hi Peter,

You sound a little like me, can you see the image in your mind that you want to create? I remember the first time I went to Frodsham to see a steam special last year, it was sheduled to take on water. I had this romantic notion that there may still be a water tower at Frodsham, the loco in the setting sun taking on water.................

Cockwood Harbour has been a popular spot with railway photographers over the years, so I have seen a few pics at that location (with some of the missing elements I mentioned).

Sometimes I am disappointed when returning to a location I have visited years before, where the inevitable modernisation has changed the scene I remembered.

Across the harbour, out of the right hand side of the shot is The Ship Inn where I had a pleasant lunch.
