Assault on Shap

A scene reminiscent of the pre 1968 steam era on the West Coast Main Line - a powerful Duchess class loco forging up the slopes of Shap Fell in Cumbria with a heavy express train. But this was shot just last Saturday as Duchess of Sutherland speeds a heritage Winter Cumbria Mountain Express towards Carlisle. The train has got a speedy run through the Lune Gorge before hitting the incline at Tebay and a mile into the long climb is on full power at about 50mph.
It was cold, wet and windy but there were hordes of photographers
at the trackside. The light was murky and I needed a fast shutter speed to freeze the train movement and also to counter the buffeting of the wind, hence ISO 1000
