Best tip?
Don't drop anything!
I bounced a lens a few weeks back and broke the front element!
Wont be doing that again in a hurry, good job it was a redundant lens!

Take one picture at a time. You get a better chance than if you take fifty and hope one will be good!

I think my tip will be at odds with greynolds'.
If you see a potential shot then initially react quickly and after that don't be shy of taking several shots of the same thing when you can give it more thought.
One way you can be sure not to get a good shot is not to take a shot at all. Also things can change quickly so that first quick reaction might save the day. I was at an agricultural show today and missed at least half a dozen shots because I didn't react to what I saw, then the chance passed.
I agree there's no point blazing away with your brain turned off but that first thought and shot might be your only chance.

When taking candid street shots, keep the camera to your eye, after getting a shot of someone. If they noticed, they are much less likely to protest if you keep the camera up and pretend to be shooting other things. It is usually only when you lower the camera and make eye contact with the subject, that trouble starts.
Also... Wear a good pair of running shoes, in case the above tip is boll**ks!
