Thanks everyone! Been at the farm without a PC until now. Still looking for the F-version. I have one but with a cracked front lens element and want to replace it. Seems the insurance company will cover some cost.

The F* lens was discontinued 26 years ago so why not get a more recent incarnation while the insurance company is on board? Being a rare lens there's no guarantee you'll ever come across another decent one.
Have you looked into getting the cracked element replaced?

The F* has the enormous advantage of its built-in handle/stand, which the FA* lacks. I would go for another F* if mine got damaged.
Keywords: Charming, polite, and generally agreeable.

The F* lens has legendary status for it's rarity and quality. If it wasn't for the slightly slower speed then I'd be all over it. Instead, I'm quite content with the DA* lens I picked up recently.
All the gear with no idea

FWIW Algernon sold his several years ago and the purchaser later reported:

I have a F*300f4.5 lens, very beautiful white colour, small, and interesting. but I have to say the DA*300 f4 is a better lens.
BTW: the F*300f4.5 and FA*300f4.5 share the same optic design with different appearance. but the DA*300f4 is believed a new design one.

I don't share that view - having used all 3 there is really very little between them in terms of IQ.FWIW Algernon sold his several years ago and the purchaser later reported:

The DA* has some significant advantages with SDM, WR and the slightly faster maximum aperture, but the F* is such a pleasure to use - it's smaller, has a great solid feel to it, the removable foot is a great feature, and the built-in hood means your not likely to misplace it. On top of all that there are very few longer lenses where I am totally confident in using the maximum aperture - the F* is the exception for me.

Having a look at the specs the F/FA* are indeed different to the DA*: http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/primes/extreme-tele/index.html
