Wretched Adverts

I switched off everything I could find in Ad Choices but I still get adverts for all sorts of junk that I`m not interested in. My undying gratitude if anyone can advise how to switch the lot off.

Use Adblock Plus as an add-on on your browser. It gets rid of everything.
DonotTrackMe is another useful one.

I can vouch for Adblock. Excellent. (No connections to the company by the way)

I've looked at these two and they seem to be for Firefox and Chrome etc. No mention of IE?.
Do they work on IE?

Cedric - on your toolbar (top-right, underneath the red X that closes your internet browser) there should be a little cogwheel. Click on this, then scroll down to SAFETY. Hover over this until you get a drop-down box. In the drop-down, you will see an item marked TRACKING PROTECTION. Click this. A box entitled MANAGE ADD-ONS should now present itself to you. On the left-hand side, you will see ADD-ON TYPES - go down onto the line called TRACKING PROTECTION. You will now see a list of various options - like everyone else, I use Adblock Plus, although I find that sometimes it can be a wee bit "over-zealous" (it will block images presented in emails I get from the likes of Tesco, Celtic Superstore, etc), but if you encounter anything you don't like about a particular ad-blocker, just tinker about in there until you find the one that most suits your needs/wants.

Woohoo! Thanks everyone, I installed Adblock plus and all of the daft ads for Blackberries and Fluke meters have disappeared. I don`t have a single advert now.

I don`t have a "Cogwheel" under the closing X on Firefox I guess it`s for IE which I never use.

I can't speak for Cedric but - I'm also running IE8 on one PC and none of the above appears on my version, ie there is no cogwheel, just a small magnifier which is part of a Google search.

I can get to Manage Add-ons via Tools but again there is a lack in that there is no Tracking Protection listed.

Another vote for Adblock Plus!! It's excellent for removing that junk information that erodes the braincells while using the net. I only wish there was a version for TV

I just looked at IE, which I never use, btw. I have IE9 it seems. Clicking on the cog wheel I end up at a website:

Those are anti tracking programmes. Not sure if they help with ads as well. I haven't looked there for Adblock Plus though.

I think the different "flavours" of IE works differently. As I'm now running Win8 with IE10, I get a cogwheel. In IE9, I think you click TOOLS, OPTIONS, then proceed from there.

So long as you get there in the end, that's all that really counts I suppose.

I can empathise with PU's desire to host adverts and generate a little additional revenue to help fund the site.

But I do wish they could be turned off for those of us who subscribe as PU plus members.

If that could be implemented, it might even persuade a few of those who don't currently subscribe to start doing so...

or Record the programme then fast forward past the ads

Yup that's what we do. trouble is you still end up absorbing the rot even when it's at x30 speed

I thought all HDD Recorders had a jump forward 1 Minute
button. (Manual Skip). My Panasonics got 10secs and 60secs
So I usually jump 4-5mins at the adds. Some are even 6 mins
which means you could be watching 24 mins of adds per hour...
which is getting ridiculous.

JVC VHS Recorder as well years ago.

Our Sky Plus box doesn't skip in increments. I've taken to looking away and counting up to about 6. That skips most of them

But your right about the increasing amount of non program time. Your lucky to get 40 minutes of programming an hour what with all the adverts and trailers.
