Well you learn something new every day
It's actually a pain in the backside ... I would rather have an older lens that has been well looked after than a newer one which has had a hard life but Canon users seem to use the date thing as a reason to batter the price down when buying used.

That's one reason to confuse the serial numbers, but also I think many manufacturers conceal their production numbers by mixing up the serial numbers. The same number groups are often used for several different products.

Olympus users pay more for an old lens with the "chrome ring"

Does anyone know if its possible to tell the age of a lens by the serial number?
I should be receiving a lens that I won on eBay in the next few days, it's a da60-250 so I know it's not old but just wondered if I can pin point the year.
