Would you buy from him?

Well, without knowing your side of the story what he's written doesn't seem too unreasonable to me. I'd also be pretty pissed off if I offered a refund for something as silly as the condition of the box and still got given negative feedback.
And, to be honest, if you really did threaten to buy it and not pay, and using multiple accounts to do so, I'd probably be less than complimentary as well

First, I NEVER did anything he stated. He asked for £10 p&p in the first place for 2nd class RM so I asked (nicely) if that was a mistake.
He then came back to me and asked me of using glasses as £10 was for international shipping and if I don't like his prices to **** off.
I then checked again and it was UK 2nd normal and messaged him with it still wondering if it was a mistake.
I NEVER USED ANY ABUSIVE OR FOUL LANGUAGE, NOR DID I THREATENED HIM!
I placed a bid for £10. He then cancelled the bid telling me that I would have anyway no intention of paying and that he got sick and tired of answering questions etc.
Next thing I know this pitch was added to his item description.

Sorry to hear that!
I'd just drop it and move on, there are millions of these lenses around. In his defence (not that I know him from Adam) when selling an item you do often get a lot of silly enquiries, e.g. asking about postage when it's clearly stated on the page. It can get quite annoying It's also easy to confuse two enquiries as it's often a bit difficult to tell who is sending it (especially when you get a lot of usernames with seem to be nothing more than random letters and large numbers)

I dunno - I would have thought he was waaaaaaay out of line with this statement
Wouldn't have thought that was normal e-bay seller behaviour
Quote:
However he is now threatening to bid extra to win and then not pay. This will of course threaten you genuine bidders.
Can please contact me before bidding so I can confirm you are not this insane nutter.
I'm sorry but if you don't contact me i'll have to delete your bid as he had threatened to use multiple accounts.
Sounds a perfect gentleman to me After all he just wants to 'vet' you before he'll consider your bid !!However he is now threatening to bid extra to win and then not pay. This will of course threaten you genuine bidders.

In fact I think that is pretty normal ebay seller behaviour. Plenty of sellers say they will delete bids from 0 feedback accounts, or overseas accounts. I have personally refused to sell a £250 lens to a bidder from Taiwan with only 10 feedbacks (all for items costing less than £5).

Tim - not accepting from zero feeedback accounts or overseas accounts [ and saying so ] is a tad different from saying that all prospective bidders must contact him first before bidding.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree I consider ebay a bit of a free for all, caveat emptor etc, and for me that's a big part of the fun! I quite like it when a seller shows some personality and isn't just repeating pllatitudes from his Marketing 101 class.

I understand that every seller can do whatever they want but if they have any beef with anyone it should not have a play in the item description and it is the language and personal attack that I object to.
I always can get another lens from someone else.
I was NOT 'the git' but I find this very poor from the seller to mention this in his sales pitch.
I checked the negative feedback and it stuck me as genuine and I thought I may be prepared to take the risk but having been at the receiving end of his profanities and see how he reacts even in a public response makes me wonder who is the one that has an attitude problem.
Here are the last three sentences that are somewhat 'clean' of his last reply:
"However, as I have detected an implied threat with regards to feedback. I will be blocking your bids.
You are just the sort of pedantic eBay I want rid of.
I will not enter into discussion any more."
I do not know where he get the idea from regarding the feedback as I never have implied anything like this, next would be calling me pedantic just because I asked why he charges £10 for 2nd class p&p (which he has changed now in all fairness but before he updated his offer it was £10 for 2nd class RM.
The rest is him being childish in my eyes.
Having such a response I would have retracted my bids anyway as I am pretty sure that it is not only the case that may be tatty.

This is OK if you got transport which I sadly do not have. I know about the inflated postage cost but charging £7.50 or so more then it should be is a bit over the top, in particular for second class snail mail without any tracking or insurance. Many sellers have inflated P&P charges. I tend not to trust sellers with over inflated p&p as it shows that the seller is willing to artificially inflating his prices.
Also I tend to ask always for recorded delivery if the item is worth it to me but sadly a lot do not offer this straight away as an option even it does not cost them any more, plus without the traceable postage you have no PayPal seller protection. I only sell via minimum of second class recorded. Cheaper items I do not sell on eBay anyway as the charges are to high in the beginning anyway.

I was selling an iPod a couple of years ago. Within an hour somebody bid the 99p starting price, then sent a message that if I would close the auction early he would add another 50p!
You have to admire some people's gall/stupidity/innocence!
But yes, when you sell on eBay it is your responsibility to make sure the item gets there. If it's likely to go over £30 then I always sent it insured. Under £30 and it's covered as standard.

That's the theory of it and you usually get your money back from PayPal if the item is lost but the hustle of it is just great plus a lot of sellers are not willing to be responsible for the posting (even they should be) and sellers like the above are usually unwilling to respond to any damage and try to move the responsibility to the buyer. My understanding is that it is the sellers property until it is in your hands. As soon as I see that someone is washing his hand on buyers (or potential buyers like the one in the link) I usually stay clear of them as it just screams out that problems may arise.
I was prepared to pay up to £20 all in all in the beginning, now I would not even pick it up for free even if he just lived down the road.
there is a limit to everything and really what does that say to a 10year old that is after a cheap lens and then reads an item description like this?
I am sure I will get another one of them or even a better one, one day.

I thought I may post a link to a good priced 135mm lens but if you read what he tells about his previous/potential customers it may just put you off straight away.
Is that the new way of advertising and showing that you care?

Remember that children looking for bargains as well and language like this should not be allowed on eBay, NO MATTER WHAT his beef is with other parties involved.
Hasn't eBau a rule that forbids behaviour like this on its pages?
In fact if he has any problems with anyone he should keep that for himself as he does himself no favours to post things like this in his 'sales pitch'.
Of course this is only my private opinion but I am sure I am not alone on that one.
