Thanks everyone for your comments. I've had a very busy few weeks and haven't had much time to devote to this subject.

SteveEveritt, I checked out FastStone Viewer (thank you) but it seems it's a Windows only program. Can anyone suggest a similar program for Macs?

At this stage when I have a little time, I think I will delve into Aperture and explore it a bit more and try to work out if it suits what I think I want. Can anyone suggest any tutorials or guidebooks to start me off?

Thanks, Dave.

Hi I have been using lightroom from the when it it came out. I am now using edition 4. I think it is easy to use and with the new pricesit is a no brainer. The best book I have used is lightroom 4 by Martin Evening.

Have you looked at GraphicConverter? I use it a lot for its browser and batch converter but it will do a lot more.

Because LR and AP are so slow, FastStone Viewer is also my go-to on the PC to go through the initial stage of picking keepers.

On the Mac I usually resort to Lyn or Photo Mechanic to do the same job.
PM also have some nice features, but I seldom use them. I guess I have to learn it one day, since I already have the software.
