that's the territorial aggression move... the male will flare out the feathers and put its head and neck back and move in a series of fast bursts towards the 'intruder' swan (or goose). you'll often see the parent do this to the cygnets at the end of winter to clear the area for the next breeding season.
if that move doesn't work the male with then 'fly' at the other bird, running across the water and flapping as if to take-off. if the other bird doesn't fly off it will be attacked and bitten. i've seen fights last hours - interrupted by time-outs to preen.
saying all that, they are very gentle birds and i've never had a problem with them - apart from causing exposure problems with photographs!

Many years ago, my wife and I were in what could be best described as a motorised punt on the River Cam, in Cambridgeshire. The punt had an outboard motor that was white and not unlike a swan in appearance. We were attacked by a male swan just like Dave's excellent photo above so we just lay flat on the 'floor' of the vessel, opened the throttle and made a quick exit!!

What lens did you use?
By the way, I see, from your signature, that you own a DA*50-150! Should that be a 50-135? It's my favourite lens by some margin, though the 16-50 is becomming my most used!

Yes it a DA* 50-135mm.
I don't think it was an aggressive move as it was just being blown across the lagoon with no other birds on its course.
The older I get the faster I was.
