Windows

Not the XP variety but stained glass windows. Over the years I have tried with variable success to photograph stained glass windows in churches and cathedrals. As I am going to Paris next week I thought I would ask for some help here as to the best way to go about such a task.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Everytime there is strange lighting involved I would opt to try to set the camera in full manual mode and do some test shots at different shutter speeds.

Stained glass is no different to most other forms of subject, you need the right light if its bright and sunny you may as well forget it, just hope for a bright but slightly overcast day when the light is flat and even, that will help you avoid clear or lightly couloured glass from burning out.

It would also pay to check beforehand if tripods are allowed.

Howard I spent a few weeks in France during May and took a few snaps of some stain glassed windows. The ones i am posting here are not the best examples (this was my first foray into DSLR photography) but it will give you an idea of what you will be up against. I found a number of the Churches and Cathedrals don't allow Photography and certainly no tripods
The large Cathedral in Rheims was probably the most lenient in terms of cameras and tripods and Notre Dame has signs saying no flash photography but will allow hand held as long as there is no service on at the time. The Pantheon is a little stricter with cameras but if you are a little sneaky you can snap a few off
