WIndows 10

My 2c...

I've run the Win 10 preview for quite a while now. It's a nice progression for anyone who liked Win 7 and didn't like Win 8.x
If you found Win 8 confusing then this should merge the newer tech with a UI that makes it far more approachable.

Personally my main computer is running Win 7 and I won't be moving that to 10 ever really.
But I won't have any qualms about installing 10 on the next one, whenever that comes. Presumably a software requirement will drive this, where it only runs on this OS or above etc.

Anything that's non important, like an old computer or laptop etc then I'd happily move to 10 on that.

What's interesting for me though is the wider device profile/use these days. I use a computer PC for serious work, and I use an ipad/laptop for media consumption and a PS3 or smart TV for viewing web content on the TV. I have little use for these media friendly type features such as voice assistance etc on my work computer, so a lot of the feature list for Win 10 just does nothing for me.

Richard, If you want to hear me rave about some photo software, then that would be Sagelight, not PhotoShop. But I don't, because I know hardly anyone is at all interested, and I'll just be shouted down by the usual ' Lightroom does that' baying I use a free copy of CS2 which does all I need. I certainly don't need to buy any Adobe software.

No, I was saying to Gwyn, if we can kick up such a fight about windows 8, imagine if we had something more close to photographers hearts to argue about! Who knows, she might actually really love Sagelight, just like me ...

Interesting thread on Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert site (MSE) about possible issues running Office 2010 and earlier versions on machines running W10, and particularly with problems on printer drivers for older printers. Might also apply to s/w from other suppliers if they don't provide updated drivers - no definitive answers yet, but worth keeping a close eye on if you are considering upgrading.

Also remember that you might have further issues if you are running pre-installed OEM versions of Office because you might not be able to reinstall these on a machine running W10 (in the same way that OEM W7 is not transferable to a new machine). That would not be problem for me as all our machines are running separately purchased versions of Office 2010/2007 (most of which I got for a song, sort of legally, when working for a company that allowed you to purchase them via the MS Gold s/w purchase scheme IIRC )

The MSE site has a lot of useful info on many other things - worth joining IMHO.

Windows 10 is much better than Windows 8. Except for a couple of comparability issues, it is a perfect OS from my opinion.

I've done a fair bit of investigation and experimentation on W10 since my last post, and now have it running on 3 out of 5 machines - the exceptions being an ASUS netbook (which would neither upgrade nor downgrade back to W7 Home Premium gracefully and without an awful lot of time -consuming problems) and my main machine running W7 Ultimate which did upgrade/downgrade fairly easily, but is now back on W7 for a whole raft of other reasons - notably that I want to stay "In Control"!.

What I can say is that there are an awful lot of hidden Microsoft "spying" and data-gathering issues which I would advise everyone to investigate and be aware of - and to install the free O&O "ShutUp10" s/w which allows you to switch off or control most of them. NB: the latest "Anniversary Update" is supposed to make things worse!

I upgraded just before the July deadline from W7 Pro, and then went back to it before the 30 day limit. I feel that there were some nice touches to W10, but outweighed by several niggly things, like the need for an extra mouse-click to get to where you wanted to (eg load a usb stick and a prompt comes up 'tap here to choose what you want to do' that then opens the box for you to select an option; Windows 7 just goes straight to that box)/ the start menu apps I removed and replaced with shortcuts to the programmes I wanted, but you lose the ability to open the last file straight from the start/ and couldn't use my main printer as no drivers for it!

All that is configurable to suit. Just like any new OS, there's a small learning curve required - I can hardly tell the difference now. The benefits of using the latest OS outweigh the inconvenience of learning do do something a little different. I bet you rush to get the latest firmware for your camera? (it's 'OS')
Remember, that Windows 7 is now an eight year old OS which like Windows XP will become unsupported by major security software companies, peripheral manufactures an so on.

Ha ha - no I don't always rush to the latest 'OS' for the camera - but I hear what you are saying re the learning curve; maybe I didn't give it enough time. However a major decision was that I didn't feel like splashing out money on a new printer just yet! (Which wasn't a reconfigurable thing - there just is no driver for it under Windows10!)

Also in respect of the age of Windows 7 - I realise that but also figure that in about 4 years time when I believe the support for 7 will cease, my PC will probably be due for renewal anyway!

Luckily our Canon MFP and Samsung mono laser continue to work fine under W10 (Home Premium at least).

OTOH, is it not the case that the extended W7 Support only applies to the Pro and Higher (Enterprise & Ultimate) versions?

Yup, I could see that from earlier posts - but the comment was in case someone else thought that W7 extended support also applied to the Starter & Home Premium versions, which I don't believe that it does.

How to reset login password for windows 10? I can't remember it clearly

You'll need to have created a password reset disc or USB flash drive. Otherwise you're out of luck.
There are ways to get in booting from a Windows 8 or 10 setup disc and using the Repair option to get to the command line to create a new Admin account. But that's advanced user stuff.

Thanks for the suggestion. I searched in Google and found this password reset tutorial, which helped me successfully reset the password.

P.S you can reset the password even without password reset disk created previously.
