get whacked in the face by a pony or horse jerking its head up , and believe me you will know about it

These Shetland ponies get very vicious with each other. They bite each other, or fight by pressing their backsides together and kicking viciously. We used to feed them bread but they got so antsy and nasty we have stopped doing that. Some of them are very small, however...

Shetlands are so often thought of as cute cuddly little ponies ideal for children.

Some are - but others ........... and it's the second variety which are more common

Llamas give a very nasty grassy hot wet phlegmy cough-sneeze if you get too close for them so I'd advise the use of a WR lens and WR Pentax brand camera. I nearly LLAMO-d when my wife got one of those

I agree about getting things into perspective George, although don't get complacent. If you don't know what you're doing keep a fence between you and the pony.

I rather doubt that your friends have told you that ponies are generally dangerous to man.

Virtually any animal is capable of being dangerous, but some, like bulls, are much more likely to be dangerous than others. In the scheme of things, ponies are amongst the least likely animals to endanger a photographer, and to call somebody brave for photographing a pony is absurd.

The person who did is clearly suffering from hippophobia, and his condition is not going to be improved by people suggesting that there is any rational basis for it.

George - sorry to disagree but I've worked with horses and ponies long enough , done carriage driving , worked at Carriage driving trials , helped train Driving horses and ponies , etc etc and believe me I'm careful . I trust no horse or pony further than I can see it and I respect them.

I've no wish to be damaged by 4 metal shod hooves not chomped on by some teeth. Mares in season cannot be trusted even if you've owned them for years - since you bred them.

Oh and I've had accidents too - even lucky to escape with my life after one of them - lovely little pair of ponies till they were frightened badly and I'd driven that pair for a year
