Will it perform, K20D ???

Hi there !

New to the forum, but not to the pentax DSLR...
I own a Ist DL and are planning to buy a new K20D. I'm at a crossroad and wonder if you all can give me advice. How good is the K20D ? Any problems that is good to know before I make my decision ? I have three DSLR cameras that I'm choosing from, and they are as follow: Canon 50D, Pentax K20D and the new Olympus E-30. Anyone who has experience in using the K20D, for shooting motorsport/action/outdoor events ? Positive and negative feedback is welcomed.

Thanks !

First of all I moved from Nikon, had D2X,D200, and moved this year after buying a K20D of which compared to the Nikon,s is a better camera all around.
1-In Camera anti-shake.
2-Lighter even with grip.
3-Build Quality
4-Dust,Self cleaning
Lots of good things that others will list here shortly no doubt..

Just to name a few thing's, as for shooting?
I am a Wedding + Portrait Photographer, Rally's in my spare time, I have no problems useing the K20D for my type of photography..

Hi Terry !

Thanks for your quick reply. So you are a pro photographer ?
Yes, I will..I'm from Sweden

Is it quick to start up ? The limit is three frames per sec, if your not using the burst mode, but with continues shooting it will not stop after three frames and buffer ? The Ist DL that I have now is doing so, three frames and then stops. To continue, I need to press the shutter again.
Are there more settings to adjust ?
If you shoot at night, and go for a higher ISO, what about the noise level in your pictures ?

I usually shoot mostly motives from nature, architechture, night photography and so on...

Okey !
I seem to get a lot for my money if I buy this camera. Why isn't so that Pentax are appealing to the Pro ? They usually go for Nikon or Canon...
Read about rumours that Pentax will release a K30D, do you think that K30D will be released in 2009 ?

Pro,s do use the Pentax DSLR's and the only reason there are more Canon/Nikon pro user's is, they (Can/Nik) have two to three new Cameras out every year flooding the market. And yes I think Pentax will bring out a K30D in 09',
Peter you will not be disappointed with the K20D, read the manual two/three times and spend time setting the Camera up to your way of working and it will serve you well..

Good Luck..

The K20d is indeed a lovely camera, I still miss mine a bit! (I swapped my K20d for TTK's D200 by the way...! I've got a D300 and a D90 now too).

I agree with everything that has been posted, but I would also say that for action photography, there are better cameras than the K20d, albeit probably more costly ones. The 3fps and focus speed/accuracy I found quite frustrating at times for things like motorsport and wildlife action photography.

The noise handling on the K20d is also very good, certainly up there with the class leading Canon 450d for instance to ISO1600 according to reviews. I know the K20d goes up to ISO1600/3200, but I don't class them as useable.

It will of course 'do' action photography, and a lot of other things very well. But, if you are going to be using the camera mainly for action type stuff, I think you should also have a good look at other cameras as well. It's the only reason I changed my K20d really.

If it had even just 5fps, and a more sophisticated focus system I wouldn't even have thought about changing, but as 75% of my photography is action based, I felt compromised more often than I was happy with. I was also attracted by the super-telephoto lenses available on other brands, but of course the Pentax DA* 300mm is a lovely lens should you need that sort of thing. Anything longer though (and made by Pentax) is a problem at the moment, although I understand they are working on that.

Before anybody jumps down my throat, I'm not saying the K20d is rubbish, because as I've already said, it's a brilliant all round camera. I'm responding to the specific point in the OP about capturing motorsport and action events, which I believe not to be the K20d's strength. Other than that, there isn't a lot wrong with it.

To be honest, if I were *just* shooting fast moving sports / action then I don't think there's anything on the market (from anybody) to touch the Olympus E-3 in terms of focus speed / accuracy. It'll shoot at a respectable 5 fps and has the additional advantage of the 4/3 sensor effectively doubling the length of all your telephoto lenses. The Zuiko 150/f2 (300/f2 effective) in particular is an astonishing lens for low light sports / nature, but of course has a price tag to match...

Which brings me to my point; if you already have some K-mount lenses then you need to factor in the cost of new glass when it comes to swapping systems. Pentax may not have the biggest selection, but most areas are now covered and I think they win hands down in the value-for-money stakes. Camera bodies come and go but a good lens is for life.

Thanks Tooks and ttk !

I will go to the nearest photostore that sells Pentax and get a feel for the K20D. Haven't held it or seen it IRL. Another plan I have is to buy new lenses and a flash to my Ist DL and wait until they will release k30d. Hopefully in 2009. I must say that I think it's strange if Pentax decides to release it soo soon.

ttk: Congrats to GB and Lewis Hamilton...I'm a Ferrari fan and will always be. Hope Massa will take it next year ! If Massa had won the WC in Brazil, I don't think that would've been fair...Lewis was the better man this year. It was sad to see, that David couldn't finish his last GP and recieve the checkers flag Already waiting for the 2009 season !
