Why we don't need FF

It's not really true though, is it, that sensor size directly relates to size of possible output. I thought actually that was in fact resolution? Resolution and sensor size are different things. I believe sensor size influences other IQ factors also, dynamic range being a key one. Potential maximum output size is related to number of pixels, not directly to sensor size, I believe ...
agreed. Resolution determines the print size, other aspects influence the quality and dynamic range.
You don't need FF to print large, you need a high res sensor. The A7s is a 12 MP camera, and it's got my attention for reasons other than resolution.

So it may have limitations for large scale output then ... Would that not rule it out for a good number of professional purposes? The K3 presumably would be a better choice for some of those ...

Never dawned on me when watching it but your right.

The XT1 is the modern digital equivalent of the MX with ME automation.

Best regards

Definitely. That's kinda central to my take on this stuff though. You pick the right tool for the job.

If you want to display on a web page, or album cover for example, or a magazine, then 12MP will be fine, as is 16MP or 24MP. If you want to print large posters, (not billboards), then you may need to step up to something with a higher resolution. Video is presently a 2MP image at Full HD, and 8MP at 4k, so 12MP is ample for that. On the flip side, any image you can take is better than a larger MP version you couldn't take because your camera wasn't useable at higher ISO levels.

With regards to this discussion, if FF is the right tool then use it. Seems really weird to make a thread about why we don't EVER need it.

You don't get a sledge hammer to drive in lots of little nails, but when you need to drive lots of posts in, then using a builders hammer is going to take for ever!

Those cameras must all be rubbish as they don't have a chunky grip
Sorry, couldn't help myself, as that's normally the comment about the A7 series, and mirrorless in general, despite classic film cameras being essentially that same body design shape for years.

I think it was Einstein who said 'If you need to look at Youtube to see if you need a FF Camera..... Then You don't need a FF Camera'

Of course if you shoot birds you will already know that FF isn't the correct tool to use You do don't you!
