Possibly because they have only the one machine.
Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, it makes K-xs.
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturday mornings, it makes K-7s. Sundays, the man that operates the machine has a day off, and Saturday afternoon he's winding the lens-element polishing machine. Once a month, another £1200 12-24 comes out at the end.
I hate to agree with him, but as the editor man at AP said, "Two cameras does not make a range."

I really think that dropping the K-m was a mistake. Ok, maybe Sony had discontinued the sensor but surely Pentax could have considered something like fitting the K-x sensor to keep it in production? The K-x would still sell on the basis of being better specified and having video mode, the K-m would remain to tempt buyers into the range. As things stand their cheapest SLR is not much less than £500, whereas the K-m wasn't much more expensive than a bridge camera.
I also wonder if there's a plan for a K2. They have, after all, re-used the other two names from the original K series range...

Don't forgot the time between the models, the D80 is just as old as the K10D and that isn't produce any longer either.
Also they upgraded a lot of hardware but it looks like the K-X and the K-7 shares a lot of the same components to save cost, if they also need to produce the K-M, K20D and the k200D then they need more lines more supplies of different parts more costs.
Matt if they place the K-X sensor in the K-M how different would the two be then? Video mode is purely a software thing. I think the cost to make the K-X and to keep the K-M in production are the same.
Ken are you also counting the FF camera's that isn't really fair right since Pentax isn't in that range.

Why couldn't they leave us with the K10 and K20 to give people a wider choice?.....it beats me
