White balance

Bit confused here.

I set my K1 WB to 4700. I open the RAW files and select "use camera settings" for WB:
Photoshop Elements says 4900
Silkypix DSPro7 says 4500

If I select in the K1 settings "daylight" WB:
Photoshop Elements says 5100
Silkypix DSPro7 says 4714

Is there not one standard in Kelvins ?

Perhaps its something to do with the way each program interprets the metadata or something, seeing as WB has no affect on a RAW image anyway.

Is there a reason you need to adjust WB when shooting RAW? I always leave mine on auto and just change it in post if needed.

I know WB does not affect a RAW file and can be changed at will during RAW conversion, but what is odd is that two seperate RAW converters think the camera setting for WB are two different settings?

I tend to avoid using auto WB in cameara as that will affect the preview image i see. I prefer to have consistency when photographing essentially the same scene.

Anyone else any thoughts on this?

For consistency I use presets such as Daylight, Cloudy, etc. Then the camera records the light as I see it. AWB tries to alter the colour temperature to make am exposure that overall integrates to grey. So, for example, a red sunset becomes diluted.

There is also a custom setting that enables some variance even with the presets. This needs switching off if we don't want the camera to "correct" even a preset.
