We were given a painting several years ago and are trying to find out anything about it eg the title and did the artist paint anything else. Have tried google but probably looking in the wrong place. Any help greatfully received. As far as I can see the artist is A maley

Looks like one by Pablo Pistoso to me from his Dancing on Water period

You might be better off asking an art appreciation forum, I presume there is one somewhere. However, photography is art as well, so maybe somebody on here can surprise us.
Best regards, John

I googled Alan Maley artist (1931-95) and the signature matches, although the style is very different to the images that come up; described as a "visual effects artist" and it looks as if he turned his hand to whatever was required. The picture reminds me of an artist whom I cannot recall at present so it is possible someone asked Alan to produce something in a similar vein.

Nothing on the back unfortunately. The person who gave us the painting (brother/brother in law) died before we got the chance to ask him if he knew any of the history of this.

Thanks to all who responded. I'll do what John suggested and see if there are and forums where I could ask.

Send the photo to someone like Christies. They will be the ones to know.

As I mentioned earlier the signature is pretty clear, including the odd use of a lower case 'm' in 'A maley' which can be seen in an image in the same place in "snowy egrets" at http://brokerage105.rssing.com/chan-6647811/all_p246.html for sale at $2700.

Thanks for the feedback Robert. There is an art gallery in Newcastle so perhaps I will call in with a photo on the off chance. Either that or wait until the "Antiques Road Show" is in the area. By this time next year I'll be a millionaire. Joking aside, I think my brother in law thought I would like this painting because of the abstract connection to the sea, I spent the best part of my working life there. It does look good on the wall anyway.

You've obviously taken the photo with one of those old Takumar lenses with the yellow tinge - if you correct the colours and re-upload it someone may recognise it.

Hope that helps
