Just off the top of my head:Why would ANYONE want v*deo on an SLR Digital camera ? Buy a v*deo camera surely !
* DOF control
* fleet of lenses for next to no money (ever priced interchangeable lens video cameras?)
* convenience of switching from still to video with no extra gear
* journalists welcome ability to grab some motion in the field without calling out a video crew

For those of us not able to afford a really good video camera, or being able to justify the expense for the very occasional quick video, something like the K-7 makes sense... you aren't really paying much of a premium for HD video, and you aren't sacrificing anything for it.
It's certainly not a good reason NOT to get a DSLR!

Well - I have to say that occasionally a mobile phone that takes piccies is a GOOD THING. Taking pics at the time of my bent car after someone threw a door open on to it was useful to disprove his claim that I drove into him .

I`m glad my subtle humour was appreciated Mike !!! As tech said - there are times when the combo will be sufficient.
Having just given Mrs.Tozza`s Fujifilm Finepix to the girls for record shots of the munchkin ( so I could buy her a K100D ?!? )I can vouch for the efficacy of the system ,
but to respond to rparmar - I`m not a journo,no I haven`t priced the lenses,I don`t take video,and I have DOF preview on my *ist,K100 and K20 already.
I agree with the mobile scenario - I want to call, answer, text and have emergency photo capability - but I am unhappy with the modern trend to " cram in " so called benefits or extras. I am looking to upgrade my CRT television but I am told that most of the better LCD sets "offer" Freeview and Freesat - I`m on cable and don`t want that - tough !! You get it anyway .
Sorry if I sound Luddite but I really do find this idea of "multi-purpose" rather self defeating in most cases.
Tony (as always IMHO)

So those of us that have no cable in our area are going to have to sit and watch a blank screen in a couple of years time when analogue is switched off because you dont want Freesat or Freeview in your tv?

My post was a little dig at Tony ... I think a mobile that can take pics and video is a great idea. I just wish they were better at it then I wouldn't be looking for a new compact to replace my K10D as a carry round camera.

With Mass production you aren't paying extra for the free view option. Making a model without it would cost more, due to limited demand.O

Remind me to try and grab a pic of the TV set up in my sitting room It's a spaghetti junction of wires and machines , TV and 6 ( I think) boxes for one thing or another, and cables and plugs All I want is a TV that works
I dare not touch anything since I don't know how it was all connected up

Wouldn't it be easier to make a camera that can call?My post was a little dig at Tony ... I think a mobile that can take pics and video is a great idea.
If you've video mode on your camera you already have a microphone and a speaker in it, all it need is a GSM antennae

Video clips - no longer than 20 seconds - points for action sequences and terrific commentary - maybe even HD or 3D ?
I`m a photographer ( allegedly ) not a cinematographer or video diarist - but I know that combination equipment always falls down somewhere - fridge-freezer/washer-drier/saloon-soft-top conversion etc - get the right tools for the job in hand - you can always video from your mobile phone !
