Which monitor do you recommend?

I'm looking at getting a new monitor and need some advice. I heard that some monitors are more suitable for gaming while others are better for editing pictures in photoshop. What are other photographers using?
Thanks for the help,
Chris

We use 19" CRT monitors. Bulky but superb quality. One is iiyama and the other Fujitsu Siemens.

I have an Emac, an Imac and a Macbook....I think they're the best monitors around....they even got computers stuck inside them.

Seriously the Apple cinema displays (23 inch is a bargian for photo editing)
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

I second the AG Neovo, I use an 19" F-419, I can't see any difference if I use my son's IBM P90 CRT, @ around £200 I reckon the AG Neovo is great value.
Cheers
Brian.

I use a couple of LaCie 321 LCD monitors. Not cheap but VERY good.

I have a Dell 19", but the monitor is only part of the story. If you buy a big monitor you need to make sure your graphics card can do it justice. e.g. a lovely 21" monitor running at 1024 x 768 in 256 colours will look pretty rubbish!

surely no one is still running a computer whose graphics card doesn't far outshine any monitors capabilities these days?

Some GFX cards have better 2D quality than others though, but since in the modern world of 3D games and triangles per second this is almost never reported in reviews it's very hard to find out which is best

I'm still stuck with a IIyama visonmaster pro 450 19" CRT.
I had a Hyundai TFT but I ditched it after I switched to a RAW workflow. The colour rendition was terrible and even Wiziwyg couldn't improve it.

I think the CRT has the advantage. Many of the flat screens I have seen are far too contrasty, positively vicious on the eyes.

A friend recommend looking at the EIZO range of LCD screens.
They seem to be cheaper in Japan than they are in the UK or US (around 500 pounds for the S2410W) but it would still be a big investment.
It seems that very few places in Japan are even selling CRT monitors, is this an issue in the UK also?

Mac User magazine did a 'Hardware labs' of high resolution flat-panel monitors in its August '06 issue. The clear winner in the test was the DELL 2407FPW, the runner up was the LG Flatron L2000C. I have looked about on the web and the DELL screen can be bought for around £550. This is the screen that I will soon be buying to replace my very average Formac flat-panel. It is always a good idea to see a screen in action before you buy but with DELL and their direct sales methods this may prove difficult.

Good luck with whatever you do end up buying.

Have a Lacie 120 "Laframe" and it's rather nice (but as with all displays it needs calibrating with a decent Spyder )

The spyder is going to be one of my next purchases.

What is a good device when looking at the current line-up?
It needs to be somewhat affordable as well.

Is the Spyder the best buy or is the huey good as well? There have been discussions on this topic before, but the devices change and the software as well. I haven't been looking into this matter lately.

I think whichever monitor you end up with, as long as what you see on screen is what you see on paper (WYSOSIWYSOP) it'll be fine.

My choice is a Samsung (they do make decent monitors) 930MP LCD TV Monitor and Epson StylusPhoto R800 printer. Calibration is achieved with a Spyder 2 and WISOSIWISOP.
