Personally I like the second one as it's level with the squiggels eye line.
I like shots like this.
Plus it looks like a meercat, watching out

Blimey Scott, they are both spot on exposure and focus wise

Perfect in fact

I like number 2 also, due to the eye contact.

I spotted a squirrel earlier but the little blighter wouldn't stay still, I'll have to include a few peanuts in my camera bag I think.

Great shots, number two has my vote.
The older I get the faster I was.

The second for me as well. When photographing these guys I like to get down to their level.

I m my local park, they are very tame and I like to get as close as possible, although sometimes they get too close...

(Just in case ur wondering this was taken with my Panasonic fz7 on wide angle, not my 150-500mm! And yes the nose is touching the lens!)

I must make a public apology to anyone who's images I have said were soft, I just read the above and thought "you must be kidding niether is sharp"

Makes mental note to wear reading glasses when in front of the monitor

good job it wasn't a Pentax lens, I hear the SMC is prone to corrosion from Squirrel snot

Both are nice Scott but I'll go with the others and say the second has the edge.

First one not interesting (did you PP it, it looks a bit oversharpened (and blurry) to me, but it may be just a wrong impression), second one not bad, nice pose, nice background/DOF behind the little beast (IMHO) .

Scott, for me it's number two as well.
Reasons, eye line and contrast with the background.

Would have been pleased to have taken either but I too will go with the second although I think the main subject is a bit sharper in the first.

In the second I would have preferred the sharpest area to be the head but it is only just off and the rest of the shot is great. Perhaps selecting the eye and sharpening that alone would be a tweak worth trying.

I am in no way particularly knowledgeable in technical matters so please ignore me if you think my comments are nonsense

Second one for me too. Althogh the first is technically sharper, the second one wins hands down. not only is the expression on Mr Squirrel's face wonderful, but more importantly the DOF has isolated him against the background, always a winner with nature shots of this type.
