What will the new Pentax really offer us?

The interesting bit will be learning from experience in what circumstances to switch it on. There's been a lot of discussion of moire, (and a few tears over it as well :wink, but it still seems a bit of an unknown and unpredictable quantity.

Not really unpredictable Nigel. It doesn't rear its ugly head generally, so it would only be where very fine repeating detail was present that it would be worth a check. At 16MP. We shall see how the K-3 behaves in due course.

That is almost to suggest that the new revolutionary technology for its reduction is mostly marketing - if the risk is so limited as you suggest why would Pentax go to so much trouble to provide this sophisticated new system? Wouldn't a PDCU upgrade for the odd bit of it now and then be far easier?

Someone at pentax must consider moire a significant issue even at 24mp.

It does save having to decide "with or without" when we buy our new camera. I see nothing negative in that.

It's a plus - a much easier marketing proposition than having an 's' and 'non-s' version to sell. And it's a first, a good marketing thing in itself

But clearly Pentax's technicians consider moire to be a significant enough concern even on the new 24mp sensor to go to all the touble. the skill is going to be to learn how to identify the risk in any given scene and make that extra judegment on the activation or not.

To be fair, there's still the same argument (or comparisons to be made between images taken with the reduction on or off) .... it's just that now you only need to own one camera instead of two to be allowed to pass judgem.........

Mike was making a tongue-in-cheek comment and tagged it appropriately with a smiley.

There were no personalities involved.

Nice one Nigel

I'm also interested in what adjectives will be used to describe the differences in image quality between the K-3 and K-5 variants and also between the K-3 in both modes.

I've heard both "huge difference" and "massive difference" by K-5IIs owners in the past when comparing to K-5/K-5II, so will we have to invent new words if the K-3 IQ improvements vastly exceed differences between II and IIs

Anyway I'm really looking to see what the high ISO performance of the K-3 is like in comparison to the K-5
