What lens should go?

Hello,

This is my first time in the forum,so I hope this is the right way to do things.
I inherited a Pentax K7 last year along with the following Pentax lenses, 18-55mm WR, 18-250mm DA, 17-70mm DA and 55-300mm DA.
My photography interests are mainly holidays, walking and wildlife and because of where I live, near the Pennines the weather can be pretty miserable so I would like to buy the 18-135mm WR lens.
This will obviously leave me with a few lenses covering similar focal lenghts and I would be interested in your help to decide which lens/lenses I can dispose of.

Phil.

Hi Gareth,
Thanks for the advice, what's your reasoning for keeping the 17-70mm lens when that would be covered by the 18-135mm except for 1mm, does it make a lot of difference?

I hadn't thought of that so I will try some close focusing and see how each of those lenses perform.
At least your thoughts are going in the same direction as mine.
Many thanks

There is a simple answer to this, if you have lenses that duplicate focal lengths, keep the best, sell the rest.

I personally would keep the 18-55WR and the 55-300DA and sell the rest. I am not sure on the 17-70DA quality but unless the quality is much better then from the 18-55WR as I would prefer the weather sealing (then again you got the weather sealing on the 18-135 as well, so its a tough one on that one)
Kind regards

You should note that there has been speculation in the past that the 17-70 is at least partially weather sealed, but not advertised for some reason. I have no idea is this is true or not, but I've read it on several occasions.

I would also disagree with Smutje about keeping the 18-55WR. The 17-70 is certainly a considerably better performer, and unless you're talking about photography in heavy rain (which most people, including me, don't enjoy) then a bit of light rain is very unlikely to harm your lens. Just use common sense and wipe it off every now and then.

On the other hand I would also be tempted to sell both of them and get the 18-135. You'd get a great very useful range, the IQ appears to be pretty good (better than the 18-55) and full-on weather sealing. The extra range means you are less likely to be changing lenses too, which is handy if it's raining.

Hi Phil,
If you decide to sell some of your gear put an add in the Classified Adverts section of this forum.

I'd definitely sell the 18-250 (it's a good lens but once you have the 18-135 I doubt it would be used terribly much). I'd consider selling the 17-70 but only after checking that the 18-135 performs as well. I'd keep the 18-55 simply as a lens you may want to include at some time if you decide to upgrade the K-7 body.

I have the 17-70 and I do like it, but given you have a K7 I would keep the 18-55 and sell the 17-70. The 18-55 will not raise much cash, and can be included with the body if you sell the camera on at a later date. Plus it is a WR lens.

The 17-70 minimum focus is 28cm, the 18-55 is 25cm. I find the 17-70 is not good at close focussing.

Wow, I didn't expect all this help and interest, so thank you all. I have decided to run at test this weekend and see which lenses I feel happy with.
My initial thoughts are confirmed by many of you, that is to sell the 18-250mm and probally the 17-70mm.
Would keeping the 18-55mm WR lens make a great deal of difference if I was to sell the K7 at a later date body only would sell as well perhaps,I don't know, I will have to think about that one.
I will drop a line next week to let you what I have decided on.

Phil.

If I were to upgrade to a K7 or K5 in the future, a WR lens would be a sweetener. My K-x is not weather sealed and obviously didn't come with WR lenses

I bought K5 recently, and I opted not to go for the 18-55.

About a year ago I bought a used DAL 18-55 for £15 to use as a sacrificial lens in the rain. Have I used it? Not even once I've discovered that when it rains heavily, I don't feel like going out to take photos, and if it's raining lightly I just continue to use my non-WR Tamron 17-50.

I do shoot in the rain, in particular in the warmer time of the year and that was one of the reasons why I gone for the K-5. Canikon may have some weather sealing too (I am honestly not sure about this as it was the K-5 preview I had first when I opted to buy a DSLR and I never looked at others as I liked what I read and I am more then happy with what I got now in the K-5) but you will pay premium for this if you want it.
I never worked with a 3rd party lens and can not comment on that one. My first 3rd party lens will be a Bigma 150-500mm in hopefully 4 to 5 month.
Rally, it should be the best lens that is kept and that may be of best use for Phil's needs all we do give him our opinion on what we each feel we would do in his shoes. As everyone is different in his/her approach to photography it may be the right choice for each person that responded but really at the end its Phil that has to make that decision and the main thing then is resale with the K-7 as it may fetches more with the 15-55WR rather then another non WR lens, but I would first look in the performance quality of each lens before making that decision.
Kind regards

Just in case you're selling the 18-250mm, I've dropped you a PM since I really need one.
