It's a tripod spacer. Some very wide diameter lenses may foul the tripod mount so the focusing ring cannot be moved. This spacer allows a bit of extra room. It is used between the camera and the tripod, the hole is for the tripod screw to go through.

Thanks John,

I've had 2 rattleing around in my camera bag for 30+ years and never used them. With the size of the hole it makes sense now.

This did come up once before but it is pretty deeply buried in a thread about the MV1.

John,

I remember when I got my MX in around 1977, that the instruction manual referred to the tripod spacer ring being necessary to prevent over-long tripod screws puncturing the base of the mirror box, due to the short tripod socket that was employed because of the compact nature of the body. Don't know whether the same rationale was true for the LX; I suspect so.

Quoting the MX instruction manual, page 35:
Quote:
6. When mounting the camera on a tripod, be sure that the tripod screw is no longer than 5.5mm. This is the depth of the tripod socket on your camera. If you use a longer screw, you will probably puncture the bottom of the socket, after which the camera will not function properly.

An regarding the tripod spacer:
Quote:
7. In order to prevent large diameter lenses from interfering with proper mounting of the camera to the tripod, attach the Spacer Ring (packed with the camera) between camera and tripod.

Hope that helps clarify it.
Best regards, John

Thanks for the clarification, John. I still have the dear old MX, but the manual went the way of such things, a long time ago. I'm actually surprised that after 35 years, I still managed to remember about the short tripod socket at all, and where the ring goes - even if the piece about what it's supposed to be used for had slipped through the memory cracks!

I had one with my first Pentax camera bought around 1983/4, a Super-A. I have never used it. It also came with a great lump of black anodised round aluminium, I've never used that either.

Must admit, I thought it was something to do with long tripod screws as well. Carried it around in the camera bag for years but never used it.

Must have missed that bit of the manual!

I used MINE only last SUNDAY -- I knew what it was -- I use it with my £28 Slik 88 tripod bought in the 1980's as the camera wobbles without it.
