If you take a high level of care over a lens then what does it need protecting from?

In fact, just as you would drive a car more carefully if it had a great big spike on the steering wheel pointed at your head, you will take even more care of your lens if you think it has less protection. These things balance out. Risk compensation.

This thread got me thinking and I decided to dig out all my filters just to see what I had squirrelled away. I rarely use any of them and to be honest, I don't know what half of them are for or if they are of high quality or not.

Most of them I have picked up with gear I have purchased from either E-bay or car boot sales.

If anyone sees anything that takes thier fancy, let me know and we may be able to come up with a viable trade or sale of some sort.

Well I love the idea of an 'Aroma' filter, does it make digital photos smell like they've come from a darkroom?

I see you have the highly desirable, rare as hens teeth, Pentax Ghostless filter. I've only ever managed to pick one up on ebay, others going for much more than I was willing to pay. Its just a shame that they aren't SMC.

Not like a darkroom but it makes stinkweed smell like a rose.

So, much like thier lenses, thier filters are also SMC and Non SMC:

Nice collection Clarky! I've got a similar boxful for the same reasons as you but only three of mine are genuine Pentax. I've even got the very same solitary B+W filter that you have!

Really must get round to listing them all on eBay at some point along with all the odd hoods, caps, etc...

So what is that B+W filter used for : I found it inside my Takumar 500mm, is it some sort of UV filter.

You wouldn't have any 49mm Takumar front or rear caps in that collection of yours by any chance :

The B+W is a standard skylight filter - still in their catalogue today. I've actually got a silver one that came with my FA43 but it's the "wrong" silver and looks even odder than having a black filter on there unfortunately.

As for Pentax / Takumar caps I'm afraid not. On the rare occassions I get genuine Pentax caps in I keep them to one side and try to match them up with Pentax lenses that I'm selling - I never have enough to go round though unfortunately. The ones I've got left over are mostly generic but there are a few Canon, Minolta, Yashica, etc mixed in there too.

If I do find a 49mm Tak cap I'll let you know though - I'm always picking up odd bundles so who knows what may lurk inside?
