What do you think?

If Pentax want to be really clever, how about their next DSLR being switchable from APS-C to Full Frame?
I'm sure that would be a winner!

It won't be as it's the APS-C K3 Prestige that has just been announced.

It's almost certain to be the case if Pentax produce a FF DSLR. The provision will be there to switch to APS-C so that crop sensor lenses can still be used.

I think John has a point, Pentax/Ricoh have a lot of crop sensor lenses and not that many which are Full Frame. A clue to the imminent arrival of a FF Camera would be the refresh of some of the FA lenses, or FA versions of the current DA lenses appearing.

On the surface, applying automatic cropping at capture might seem like a pointless waste - why buy FF when you're going to cut a lot of it off. But I guess there is more to higher IQ on a bigger sensor then just additional pixels ...

Also it will help many to make the move - it will be good to be able to carry on with some special DA lenses if they offer what is needed even without the full image circle, and allow you to get shooting while arranging a new lens collection.

There seems to be little point of in camera cropping to my mind.

Nikon though seem to like the idea with their 800 series as cropping pushes the frame rate up to 7 per second.

I'd actually like to see Pentax go lighter and smaller. That with weather sealing seems to be distinctive in a crowded arena of black consumer kit. For example the K3 has grown in size and weight over the K5's. Perhaps time to shrink the electronics where possible and look at combining the steel chassis and mag alloy casing in something monocoque and lighter?

The idea is good and as mentioned above is already in use

Like many great ideas you find someone else beat you to it

One question is, will there be any special qualities inherent to some of our current aps-c sized DA lenses that would still be worthwhile even with a load of pixels chopped off around the edges?

I suppose Nigel that it will be helpful in keeping up the Pentax tradition of backwards compatibility. Those who want the features of a new FF body but can't afford to replace all the lenses will be able to still use them. As the pixel count is likely to be 24MP or even 36MP, the cropped setting would simply bring us back to something we already have now.

As for lenses, all the older lenses would take on new life and there's always something pictorially to be gained from using lenses for purposes not quite intended. What that may be remains to be seen.
Best regards, John
