What Camera Review

I just bought a Pentax K20d so obviously I'm not clear on the out-of-date concept. I've had it a week and am thoroughly enjoying myself.

IMHO an out of date camera is only one that can't be used any more, for example, if the film type is no longer available.
Even that is often not insurmountable though, although electronic cameras do become defunct when the batteries or electronics are no longer replaceable.
Pentax currently offer three DSLRs, all of which are perfectly well useable and "up to date" compared with offerings from their competitors. There isn't anything in terms of photography that you can't do with them, so how much more do we need them to be?

Nikon higher end bodies can also meter with my Adaptall 2 lenses which Canon is unable to do (as I understand it) due to the mount change a few years back.
Saying that if Canon can get the same low light performance as the D300 with a 18MP sensor then I can see real panick in the Nikon camp.
A 1.6 18MP crop sensor with 8fps will make a excellent wildlife/sports camera "IF" the all new autofocus system performs as they say it will.
I think all Canons meter fine in aperture priority and manual. AF confirmation works if you get the adaptors with the AF module. K mount, M42, all old Nikon (!), Leica R mount and the Adaptall equivalents etc. Canon FF bodies might cause some issues with lenses with deep rear elements.smc wrote:
Canon would get my vote: you can use M42 and almost all K mount glass. I suspect the 7D may also be at the same level as the Nikons for low light performance. Otherwise, I think from limited experience Canon handling is better than Nikon.

We'll see about the new AF system, but not really the point if mounting old glass.

I agree entirely ..so why ll the fuss when a new camera comes out and all the nit picking about specs ?

Have to say write up on latest Nikon300s makes for interesting reading .
One just has to face up to the fact whatever you buy will be out of date in 12 months time( or even less).

Why chase specs and pixels ?

The current one is always out of date.I mean why get new one if current one isnt out of date ?
Personally I want more megapixels so I can crop harder, focus compensation and better autofocus. Being a K10D user I can get all of those things with a K20D but if I can afford to jump a model and get the bonus (to me) of video, better liveview, more fps, better build quality and a few other extras then why not.
Of course, you notice I say I want and not I need

I think RR was refering to you saying "One just has to face up to the fact whatever you buy will be out of date in 12 months time", then John replying "IMHO an out of date camera is only one that can't be used any more, for example, if the film type is no longer available", and then your reply to that of "I agree entirely", which does seem to contradict your first statement.

Well, to be fair, it's not about grammar, it was more of an apparent 180 degree shift in opinion, then back again when you agreed with Mike.
I'm sure you were actually agreeing with the third paragraph of John's post, but it was just unfortunate that it could be taken out of context.
I suppose both points of view are valid anyway - the technology may be 'out of date' compared to current products, but they're still perfectly capable of taking decent shots, so not 'out of date' in that respect.
Not something I tend to worry about too often, to be honest.

Indeed , I should have learned from other websites that one does tend to get "jumped on" if one isnt careful what they say. I will make of point restricting my posting to things I am more qualified to talk about

It can overexpose slightly on scenes with very bright highlights, but only by 2 thirds of a stop at most, which can easily be dialled out using EV compensation.
The last half dozen shots on my Flickr were taken with my adaptall Mike.
