What a difference an hour makes...

Hi all,

I paid a visit to Virginia Water in Surrey yesterday, and these are a couple of the better ones.. same place, but about an hour apart and a different height of viewpoint.. I particularly liked the ripples near the bank in the second.

Feel free to pick them apart though..

Nice pics, like the colours in the water on the second one. Though horizon a little too central. Also may just be me, but is the horizon straight on the first one? I always find myself doing that, I'm beginning to wonder if I have one leg longer than the other

I had to look twice as well, but yes it is. It's because there are two banks at differing distances on the far shore. I had to pull down a couple of gridlines to check it though.

I think this is an example of where breaking the rules is the right thing to do.

The way the shape of the tree line is suggestive of the shape of the water creates an almost-line of symmetry that works very well half way up the frame.

Definitely a bit wonky in the first one.

The first one is straight I tell ya..

It's an optical illusion, caused by all the different angles.. mainly the chunk of grass in the left corner.

try this.. get your mouse mat and cover the bottom half of the picture leaving 1/4 inch of water above the edge. Et voila..

I'm not entirely convinced. I agree the differing distances of the bank make it look worse than it is, but it also appears to me that the base of the layer of cumulus above the most distant part of the water is not quite parallel to the edge either. Cumulus cloudbases are usually pretty horizontal. Not always, though, so I withdraw the "definitely"

I tried a 0.5 degree clockwise rotation, and to my eye it all seemed a lot better.

I like the colours in the second one. The first one reminds me of Sunday morning walks working up an appetite for the roast.

Try this-

scroll the pictures until the water level is horizontal with the top frame of your internet browser or picture viewer.
In these cases, they are not horizontal and it is not the frame of the viwer!

By the way, has anyone bothered to check the obvious? how much lager was consumed during the shoot??
