Weekly Competition # 81 - Flower Power!

What a super subject!

The only problem I'm going to have is choosing which one to submit.

I think that everyone has some worthwhile flower photos, I have entered one of mine after uploading two others to the Gallery in the last few days.

I agree. After a few hours I got my choice down to 4 and have decided to go for volume rather than the individual flowers of my other 3

There are some real stunners in there already this week - I'd have an incredibly tough time trying to judge this one.

We are not half way through the week but already it is going to give the judge a difficult task.

From my direction it has been a new and very useful experience. Normally I struggle to find, or shoot, a picture that will fit the competition subject. However for this subject I have lots of possible submissions to draw from but found that trying to pick one has made me a lot more critical of my pictures.

The worst thing that I found was that I was not concentrating on the depth of focus and many of my flower pictures have a part of the flower, usually just the furthest edges, out of focus.

I think Hyram's dog rose is a fantastic example of how to get it right and I'm sure that stopping down to f16 has contributed a lot to achieving this.

So this competition has already taught me something useful. All I need is some flowers to try it out on. Roll on the spring!

What you are describing is depth of field.

Depth of focus is the amount of leeway you have when manufacturing a camera - it relates to the placement of the CCD or film plane. Just like depth of field in the subject, at the fil plane there is a certain amount of depth of focus available. The degree of accuracy has to be higher the smaller the format.

This is quite interesting because smaller formats have more depth of field but much smaller depth of focus, so manufacturing standards have to be much higher. This is where the 110 film cartridge failed.

Some very, very nice photography in this competition, difficult job for the judge.

Last week mono was prominent, this week its yellow - so far.

Yellow is this seasons mono colour...

There are some stunning flower pictures in the Gallery entered by non regulars in the weekly competition section. I'm sure, as Coriander said in another thread, that a lot of people are scared of winning as it's quite a responsibilty setting and judging the next topic. Its also quite exciting.

In the UK the new season colour is white with a splash of yellow
