Weekly Competition # 80 - Nearness

Frankly I couldn't care less about winning, I've always thought that most competitions were pretty meaningless (for example, a friend got a BAFTA life time achievement award and hasn't worked since!)

This one however is different in that C+C (often of a high order) is provided for all as Hefty1 points out. Without that I see no point in it I'm afraid.

Of 7860 members registered only 600 or so have posted more than twice and of that number only around 260 are regulars (Its hard to be precise) and of that number there is a smaller bunch of usual suspects who enter the competition.

Not wishing to retread stony ground, I do agree with Martin and Hyram that we should make it clear what is expected of the winner/judge. When the competition evolved within the forum there was little need for any written rules at all since we all knew how it worked.

It's all quite clear and is followed up by PM where necessary. It must be quite clear because every judge so far has done what was expected.

If our recent jusge is unable to provide a critique then it will be covered.

I've got to agree with John that, even if not written down, it is clear what is expected.
From the first competition I entered it was clear to me that the judge had to give considered c&c.
So anyone who is vaguely regular on this site would be aware of this convention, even if it is not written down.

( That's why I was made up with my 2nd place, most of the kudos, but I didn't have to judge )

It would be no bad thing to have entrants from outwith this little circle who wont know things that aren't written down.

you have to remember of course that Uffes, has only been with us for 2 1/2 weeks, and won almost straight away after joining. I think he can be forgiven, especially as someone for whom English isn't their first language, for not being up to speed on the rules and etiquette just now. Now where's that friendly Pentaxian bent that we're all famous for eh?

As a thought, although I generally abhor censorship in a forum!

I suggest that the points made so far be taken on board by whoever it may concern, and that this thread be deleted, in the hope that Uffes hasn't read it.

As a brand new member, can you imagine what it would be like to see this thread, especially after being so happy about winning a competition so soon after joining? I'd personally be mortified. He sounds like a nice person, keen to be here, and hopefully really encouraged in his hobby after the win. Don't really want to chase him off do we? Not a great advert for people thinking about joining either is it.

Sorry Liam, I disagree on this matter. No one is attacking Uffes in person.
Or trying to chase him off.
The question is: How can we persuade all future judges to be, to spend at least a few words on each entrie submitted to the competition.
As stated earlier........Every one likes to hear how their photo is received and critiqued by the judge. Because all of us here want to learn.

There is no need to be afraid of harsh words by members who submit and don't agree with the verdict. You only have to browse through a couple of judge reports, to notice that.

So No, don't delete this thread, not that it would help anyway. Chances are very great he has all ready read it.

Until last week every one has indeed. So I'll guess that isn't a bad score. Still....Things like last week might happen again. Just my opinion of course. But.... if it does, it isn't the end of the world, so...enough said by me about this subject.
