So is the winner of this week's competition excluded from the chance of winning the prizes in the 500th? Wouldn't be better to have a separate dedicated competition just for that alongside the normal ones?

It's exactly the same as what happened for 100, 200, 300 and 400 competitions and is just a little bonus to celebrate reaching these milestones. I guess nothing is perfect, but it ensures continuity. Even if it was a separate competition it still needs a judge, who couldn't win of course.
Hopefully as in all the previous cases we can see it as a small sacrifice for the kudos of being a Milestone Judge.

Had a thought on this while I was out.
Why not have the winner of this week's comp defer setting the competition until the following week so all have an opportunity to enter. Then perhaps get the PU/Ephotozine team to set and judge this 500th. Just a thought and not cause this week's winner to receive a booby prize! Sounds much fairer to me and makes more of an occasion of it.

The usual Competitions section will be used of course, not the forum thread!
As regards judging, the whole point of the competition is that it's set and judged by the membership. I understand JAK's point, but it seems fair to me that we do the 500th the same way we did all the others. We can't deny the winner of 499 the right to judge as per all the others.

This week's winner just sets and judges competition #501, i.e it is deferred a week. The winner of #500 gets the goodies in lieu of setting a comp. It doesn't seem at all fair that the winner of #499 is ineligible to win the special #500.

The title has now been announced, so good luck everyone!
I've also been in touch with Magdalena and she is perfectly happy to be judging this milestone competition and would rather have that opportunity than have a try at the prize.

Haha, excuse my French (literally); apparently in English the proper term is self-portrait though Google seems to think the French term is ok, too. Will add a clarification to the competition. My apologies.

Ah, thanks, ok .... I thought it might be that the portrait had to be taken with green square mode!
Hmmm, but I do feel that people with articulating screens may have an unfair advantage ....

You're right. I expect some will get someone else to take it for them!
Long focal lengths might be a bit of a give-away, or some have very long arms.
Is an auto-portrait the same as a selfie (or however it's spelt?)

I have taken self portraits (on a K5 and K3) using a long wired remote and pressing the button with my toe! And using a the self-timer. 12 s to rush back to my position.

The remote control for our DSLRs should be an obvious tool..... It can be held in a hand well below the frame, assuming a fairly close in portrait. Focusing well on the eyes will be the tricky technical thing, given inevitable small displacements each time we get up to check the camera screen.

Do a burst and gently sway your head backwards and forwards :- diy focus bracketing! PS My avatar was taken with a remote

Otherwise, just enter as normal in the Competitions section and you could be a PU Plus membership and a Vanguard bag better off if you win!
